Canadian Singer/songwriter Patrick Watson is back with his fifth studio album Love Songs for Robots for Domino Records.

Watson is a true artist who manages with each album to conjure something that is at once both melancholic and elated. As with the previous four albums, this one is elegantly performed in the music and the vocals. Each song is like an eerie tale from some other world, the music sliding in and out of other dimensional space, Watson's vocals the vehicle that carries us up and down the frequencies. It's all entirely original in one sense; each track coming from a very different place than any of his earlier work. The same dreamlike quality remains however, which seems to be Watson's signature, invoking reverie in his listeners.

When asked about the theme of the album Watson said this:

“I started thinking about things in a very mechanical way. As you get older you get to know yourself better and I realized that a lot of my emotional reactions were mechanical responses. I didn’t want to be a robot. But the reason why we are superior to computers is that we have emotions and I realized that emotions are mechanical so the only thing left between us and robots is curiosity and inspiration – and I don’t think you can program that into a computer.”

If it's pop you are looking for you might want to skip this album. (Although the track 'Turn into the Noise' – a magnificent, dramatic opus – was actually used for the mid-season return of The Walking Dead, so maybe the mainstream is actually broadening it's scope more than I give it credit for). But if you are looking for something profound and rich, something that draws from a deeper well of creativity and feeling, look no further. Love Songs for Robots will not disappoint.

Love Songs for Robots will be released on May 11th. Pre-order your copy at: https://itunes.apple.com/ca/album/love-songs-for-robots/id966348841
